News from the Week of 11/15-11/19
Science has kept us busy this week. We have learned about the three rock types - sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic and how they are formed. We used play dough to make models of each rock type. We have been reviewing for our test at the same time. Your child should have brought home partially filled in study sheets in his/her Friday Folder. These need to be reviewed before the test. We will continue to complete them on Monday and Tuesday, so they need to be brought back to school in the Friday Folder. The science test is on Wednesday. Please help your child review for it at home.
It was great to meet with many of you during conferences! Thanks for making the effort to find out how your child is progressing. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time.
In math we continued our unit on measurement. We talked about customary and metric forms of measurement and the language and tools used for each one. We will continue and expand this concept next week.
The children have been working diligently on their songs and reader's theater script for the Thanksgiving Show. We hope you can join us on Wednesday at 9:30AM to see the culmination of all their hard work. Please make sure your child is on time to school that day and well rested for the performance.
Next week will be the last installment of the organizational plan for third grade. Expect to see the assignment notebook come home with all the assignments sheets attached to it. Keeping them in one place should help the children keep track of what work needs to be accomplished. Continued adult supervision of their work is needed until they mature into fully independent workers.
Just a reminder...the Friday Folder needs to be emptied except for the "Study Papers" side. These papers need to stay in the folder for review. Any papers to be "reviewed and removed" that are left in the folder will be purged at school by Friday.

News from the Week of 11/8-11/12
Charlotte's Web is getting more and more intriguing. We learned that
Charlotte's plan to save Wilbur's life involved spinning messages in her
web. Ask your child if the/she can remember the first message (Some
Pig) and the second message (Terrific). See if he/she can recall what "Explosion" (the rotten egg broke) saved Charlotte's life.
This week we started cursive writing! It was introduced last year, and now that the children work more efficiently, we are able to add it in to our morning routine.
In our study of nouns, we have been entertained by the educational School House Rock videos. The catchy tunes help to cement what the children have been taught through more formal instruction. The children also enjoyed listening to "Mr. Morton" on CD. See if they can remember the lyrics, "Mr. Morton is the subject of the sentence. What the predicate says he does."
In math we have started a unit on measurement. The children had fun measuring with their feet and with their math journals (standard unit of measurement). To insure growth in speed and accuracy with math facts, Mad Minutes need to be completed daily at home.
We spent more time studying minerals and rocks in science. Ask your child if they know the difference between the two. We will have a science test next Wednesday before Thanksgiving (extended from what I told the kids today in class). If your child is going to be gone, they should plan on taking it this Friday. There will be a study packet going home on Wednesday. It will be in the Friday Folder.
The 3rd grade team is still striving to make things easier for everyone. So, this is the final installment of the organization plan. The red Take Home Folder will be for ALL (General Studies, Judaic, and Hebrew) homework going home and needing to be returned to school. The Friday Folder will be for everything else. The Assignment Notebook will contain all three classes' assignment sheets (starting next week). The list of spelling words will be written underneath the General Studies Assignment Sheet. All correspondence needs to be done in this book. We do our best to make sure the folders get in your child's backpacks to go home. Please make sure to do your best to make sure they get back in the backpacks to come back to school.

News from the Week of 11/1
The first quarter has now ended and with the start of the second quarter, we hope to simplify things even more in 3rd grade. Study Hall is the new name for our 10:00 break. During this time, students will have a chance to finish incomplete work (due the previous day). It is also a chance for them to ask any questions on any work that they may not understand.
A new folder system is also up and running starting today. Your child will still have the red Take Home Folder. This folder will contain only General Studies work. One pocket is for the assignment sheet and homework that needs to be completed. The other pocket is for homework to be turned in and signed notes or papers.
The daily assignment sheet is updated and will be passed out & completed on Monday. Although filled out in advance, the assignments may change. Your child will update the sheet if this happens, and the changes will also be noted on the blog. The assignment sheet will serve as the communication page and should be checked and signed every night by a parent.
A new Friday Folder will be used on Fridays to take home corrected work and study papers. It needs to stay in your child’s backpack and will be used by all classes. One pocket is used for corrected materials that should be reviewed and remain at home (unless there are questions). If your child does not understand why a problem is incorrect and you are unable to help him/her with it, he/she is able to get additional help from me at school during Study Hall. The other pocket is used for materials that are to stay in the pocket until removed at school. These papers are used by the student during the week for review at home.
In Science, this week we set up an experiment comparing seed growth with soil type. We explored the hardness of minerals with a scratch test and learned about some different uses for minerals.
We reviewed the trade-first subtraction algorithm and addition with three or more addends in math this week. Tuesday is the math test covering chapter two. Your child has a study packet in their Friday Folder. This is NOT homework. It is for them to utilize for at home review for the test. It should remain in the folder when not in use. Any questions they have or concepts they need additional help with can be addressed during study hall on Monday and Tuesday.
We’ve completed chapters 8 & 9 in Charlotte’s Web. The children pretended they were Fern and wrote a letter to her mother telling her why she could hear the animals talk. Ask your child if they remember what spider ability Wilbur claimed he had but was proven wrong.
In English, we have completed the first test and now are addressing the topic of nouns. The assignments in the Workbook Plus have been simplified. The “Challenge” activity on the second page is now for Enrichment only and does not need to be completed. The first page and the writing activity on the bottom of the second page (done on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to the first page) still need to be completed. If you are in need of lined paper for home use, please let me know. I have plenty to share.
Please don’t forget to sign up for conferences. I look forward to meeting with you!
