News from the Week of 12/13

In reading we finished Charlotte's Web. It was a sad but sweet ending and we are now working on our culminating activity. Next week we will be watching the video and having a special spider celebration. After the break we will break into smaller groups for reading three days a week. Each group will focus on certain skills according to their needs. Kim Stock will be teaching two of the groups in order to provide more focused instructional time for each group.

The children took the chapter three math test on Thursday covering measuring, area and perimeter. After the break we will be moving on to multiplication and division. If your child's adding and subtracting skills are weak (cannot complete 30 math facts in a minute)he/she will be receiving work on a certain fact family (i.e. 4+7=11, 7+4=11, 11-7=4, 11-4=7) each week. Addition and subtraction facts are key to success in multiplication and division and mastery of basic facts is essential. Reviewing flashcards and fact families at home is a good way to help strengthen these skills.

On Wednesday there is a social studies test. In your child's Friday Folder should be a packet of social studies worksheets for review. Next week instead of the typical homework assignments in math and English, assignments will be given from the social studies text book in order to help review for the test. After the break we will start a new chapter in science entitled "Conserving Resources."

There will be no new spelling or vocabulary homework for next week. We will be reviewing the past four chapters from our green vocabulary book.

Today we cleaned out our lockers and our desks. Please take time this weekend to clean out your child's Friday folder and backpack. The only thing from General Studies that needs to be kept is the social studies review packet that should be in the "study papers" section of the Friday folder.

Enjoy the weekend and the upcoming break!
