Newsletter 9/14/10

Reading/Writing/Language Arts

This week we continued working on Wisdom Books.  This week’s story was The Empty Pot by Demi.   “A long time ago in China there was a boy named Ping who loved flowers.  Anything he planted burst into bloom.  The Emperor loved flowers too.  When it was time to choose an heir, he gave a flower seed to each child in the kingdom. ‘Whoever can show me their best in a year’s time,’ he proclaimed, ‘shall succeed me to the throne.’  Ping plants his seed and tends it every day.  But month after month passes, and nothing grows.  Ping must go to the emperor with an empty pot.”  Ask your child how the story ends.

Math

We worked on the following skills:
·         adding, subtracting and skip counting with the calculator
·         place-value
·         representing amounts of money with coins using dollars and cents notation
·         Comparing and estimating with amounts of money

Science

We discussed components of the scientific method and experimented making large bubbles from a bubble wand made of straws and string.  Thanks to Morgan for bringing in the straws! We will have our first Science test on Tuesday, September 28.
Thanks to Judith Cohen’s assistance, our newsletters and homework assignments are now available at http://larmeni.blogspot.com/.  Please check there for other information including Second Step lessons.  Unless you notify me, you will no longer receive hard copies of the newsletter.

Ohio state tests for third grade in reading only starts the week of October 14.  Children who pass the test in the fall are not required to repeat this part of the test in the spring.  Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep each day this week.
